The CH-53 Sea Stallion is among the Sikorsky S-65 family of heavy-lift transport helicopters. The CH-53 was originally developed for use by the United States Marine Corps, but it is also in service with Germany, Iran, Israel, and Mexico.
The CH-53 has seen considerable use in warzones and served in various conflict during its service starting with the Vietnam War. It proved useful during the Vietnam War, recovering even more downed aircraft than the CH-54.
This specific CH-53 model is the CH-53E, Super Sea Stallion, which is the largest and heaviest helicopter in the United States military. The CH-53E can transport up to 55 troops or 30,000 lb of cargo and can carry external slung loads up to 36,000 lb. The Super Stallion has a cruise speed of 173 mph and a range of 621 miles.
